WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...METHAMPHETAMINE
Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant with a high potential for addiction.
Commonly know as "speed" or "crystal", (when sniffed or swallowed) "crank"(when
injected) or "ice" (when smoked). All forms of the drug come with a high risk for
abuse and addiction.
What does it do to your mind/body?
Methamphetamine is in the class of drugs known as "amphetamines," strong
stimulants ("uppers") that activate the Central Nervous System. Even small
amounts of methamphetamine can increase heart rate and respiration, feelings
of well-being, and the belief that you can "keep going forever" without the need
for sleep or food. Without rest and food, however, the body doesn't replenish
it's energy supply and long term methamphetamine users are at risk of using up
the body's natural reserves.
Methamphetamine can cause:
- nervousness
- severe anxiety
- sleep problems
- nausea
- sweating
- mental confusion
- high blood pressure
- irregular heart beat
- hypothermia (lowered body temperature)
- convulsions
- death
