Expedition To Do List | The Team | Expedition Schedule

Climbing Through Red Tape
If you are planning an expedition to Mount Everest you really have a lot of paperwork to do. Here are just some of the permits and approvals the "Everyone has an Everest" Expedition needed before they went shopping for the right climbing equipment.

  • Detailed descriptions of all technical/electronic equipment (cameras, generators, satellite equipment, etc.) coming into the country. This includes:
Model name, model number, serial number, value. This information is for customs purposes.
  • Climber biodatas detailing information on each climber, his/her climbing history, etc.
  • Authorization Letter for each climber from his/her national climbing organization. (This is to insure that each climber has the proper climbing experience and training.)
  • Applications for permits to climb.
  • Applications for permits to film.
  • Authorization Letter naming the Nepali outfitter to act as local administrative agent so that other paperwork can be handled by the outfitter in Nepal instead of having to go directly through the team leader back in North America.

All of these permits cost money - the climbing permit alone cost about $70,000 for the first 7 people on the permit and $10,000 for each additional climber. Add to that the cost of facilities at base camp and the higher camps, wages for Nepalese staff and climbing sherpas, climbing equipment and gear, plane tickets, cameras, satellite equipment and usage time, etc., Well… as you can see… it all adds up.
