Nancy's 2001 journal
May 21, 2001: "I feel so alive up here!""
Camp Two: 7:00 a.m.

I'm looking out my tent - such a beautiful sight. It is a calm, clear morning.

I just said goodbye to Ang Gelu, Mingma and Danaru. Danaru is carrying a load to the South Col; he'll be back tonight. Ang Gelu and Mingma will break trail above the South Col tomorrow.

I also said goodbye to Christina, who is on the Chilean team, and Yuri's Lhotse team. I wish I was going today, too.

For the last two days we've had lots of meetings with other teams. It appears about 80 people will try to summit on the 23rd! We've decided that it's just too dangerous to be up that high with that many people. Our judgement tells us to wait until the 24th. So Š patience for one more day at Camp Two. And we pray the weather remains good!!!

I'm feeling healthy, but not too fast. The friendly advice I keep getting is: "In this long race, the goal is to cross the finish line. Don't try to break any speed records." I am the turtle that doesn't stop, not the hare." Slow and steady. In Nepali, "Derry bistare" (very slowly). Or, "More bistare mahtee jandai garzee" (I go up very slowly). I've quite enjoyed learning some Nepali from the Sherpas.

That reminds me, this time at Camp Two there are a lot of us Westerners. We seem to get segregated from the Sherpas. I had such a great time on my last trip up here. Then I was the only Westerner; it was like having six brothers with me. Now, everything is more formal.

Ben seems to be doing well. He had a busy day yesterday with all the meetings. Inaki is fighting a little flu bug. Of course he'll still run circles around me going to Camp Three. Tomorrow is a big day for me. Camp Three is higher than my previous high point (Aconcagua). I'm excited!

What else? I feel so alive up here. I think it's because I'm following my dreams. There are so many times it has been difficult. Times when I've questioned myself. But I've persevered Š and here I am: not just dreaming my dreams, but LIVING my dreams.

Caso Jorailo - breakfast ready! Gotta go. Oh, it will be nice to eat some different food in Kathmandu. It all starts to look the same after two months! : )
